Is there any good alternative to DEET? We like to spend a lot of time outside, but in the summer that means mosquitoes and all the scary diseases that they can carry, not to mention the itchy bites.

Seems like all the experts tell you to use bug spray with high levels of DEET. Even Consumer Reports rate those the highest at repelling bugs. I guess from now on, we'll just make sure to wash that stuff off right away when we head back inside.

DEET can act as an irritant, in rare cases, it may cause skin reactions. Despite the positive things, it can bring as it will definitely keep mosquito and other insects away from you, the effect it will bring is much more than the effect these insects will cause you. It was developed by the United States Army, following its experience of jungle warfare during World War II. It was originally tested as a pesticide on farm fields, and entered military use in 1946 and civilian use in 1957.

I agree! DEET, which is the most common active ingredient in insect repellent can lead to lasting health issues and can even result in death when in case of improper handling. It has been detected at low concentrations in water bodies as a result of production and use, such as in the Mississippi River and its tributaries, where a 1991 study detected levels varying from 5 to 201 ng/L.
